Butler Township is moving forward with plans to appoint a new real estate tax collector.
Upon being informed Monday of the passing of William Helsel last week, Butler Township Commissioners were instructed by their solicitor that under the law, they have 30 days to appoint a successor.
Township Commissioners directed Manager Ed Kirkwood to advertise for interested candidates to apply with letters of interest by March 2. A candidate will then likely be chosen at the commissioners’ next meeting (on March 5) to serve the rest of Helsel’s four-year term, which began in January.
The Butler Township Tax Collector is an elected position with an office at the Township Municipal Building but the Tax Collector is not a township employee. The collector owns all tax equipment and employs a staff to assist with responsibilities. It has yet to be determined if there will be a delay in sending out this year’s real estate tax due cards.
