Crews spent hours fighting a fire at a Butler Township home Sunday night.
The initial call came into the Butler County 911 Center around 9 p.m. for smoke coming from a home on Westview Drive. Once they learned the house was on fire, Butler Township firefighters were joined by crews from Prospect, Unionville, Evans City, Penn Township, Butler City and Connoquenessing to help.
As crews worked at the scene, they found a fully involved fire. Butler Township Director of Emergency Services Scott Frederick explains.
“We had a partial collapse inside the building. Nobody was inside when that happened, so we had to go defensive and that made it a little more difficult because we had to cut holes in the roof and do fire prevention through the roof as best we could and then the structure was still standing so we were able to do defensive operations through the windows,” Frederick said.
The structure was a total loss. Although a couple of dogs made it safely out of the structure, Frederick reports a firefighter needed treatment.
“We had one taken for evaluation. They were treated and released with no long term issues,” Frederick said.
A portion of Acre Avenue had to be shut down to allow crews to access fire hydrants. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
