Butler Township Commissioners have chosen a new real estate tax collector.
Following a public interview with three applicants, Olivia Wiest was appointed the next Tax Collector of Butler Township by unanimous vote of the Butler Township Commissioners. Commissioner Joe Wiest was not present.
Olivia Wiest still needs to be bonded through the county and officially sworn in but she will likely serve through 2019 with an election held that year to determine a second two year term then the position will return to a four year term. Wiest lost an election last fall by a narrow margin to incumbent tax collector William Helsel who passed away in February.
Wiest attended Butler County Community College and is currently pursuing a degree at Slippery Rock University. She currently works at the YMCA and has spent time job shadowing other tax collectors in the area. She hopes to work with staff already in place and plans to add additional evening hours at the tax office.
