The Pittsburgh Pirates have now lost nine games in a row after a doubleheader sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates lost game one 3-1 and then were almost no-hit in a 9-1 game two loss. Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas allowed a double to rookie Cal Mitchell in the ninth inning. The Bucs had four errors in the opening game, including three by shortstop Diego Castillo. JT Brubaker’s record fell to 0-7. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits while pitching into the sixth inning.
Bryse Wilson allowed seven runs in the first two innings of game two.
The Bucs and Cardinals complete their series tonight at 7:45pm. Pre-game on WISR is 7:20pm.
The Pirates are off Thursday, then open a seven-game home-stand Friday with the first of three games with the San Francisco Giants.
The Pirates have had six players age 23 or younger appear in a game this season, the most in the major leagues. They include tonight’s starting pitcher Roansy Contreras.
