After holding a special collection for victims of Hurricane Harvey last week, local Catholic churches will collect an offering for victims of Hurricane Irma later this month.
The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced the collection will run from Sept. 30 through Oct. 1 and will benefit residents affected in the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and both Carolinas.
Proceeds from this collection will go to Catholic Charities USA for immediate needs such as food and water as well as long term recovery and rebuilding. Other funds will be distributed through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to help with repairs and rebuilding of parishes in affected areas.
Donations from the Hurricane Harvey special collection have not yet been forwarded to the Diocese so there is no estimate available of the total amount collected.
