Charles “Charlie” Alexander Stitt, 85, passed into the presence of the Lord peacefully on March 1, 2022, surrounded by his family at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.
Born December 1, 1936, in Massena, NY, Charlie was the son of the late Charles L. Stitt and Sylva Howe Stitt. In 1951, he and his family moved to Glenshaw, PA and he graduated from Shaler High School in 1955.
After graduating from high school, Charlie attended Leigh University where he studied metallurgical engineering and graduated with a BA in applied science (1959) and a BS in metallurgical engineering (1960). Charlie served in the Army Reserves for a number of years.
In 1960, he began his career for Armco Steel as a Metallurgist and retired in 2001 as an executive for AK Steel.
He met his wife, Ruth, at Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh and they were married on August 11, 1962. Ruth passed away on January 17, 2021.
Charlie, like his wife, had a lifelong interest in missions. They made three trips to a Middle Eastern country to promote the Gospel and to assist missionaries in the area. He was a long-time member of the Community Alliance Church.
Charlie had a zest for life and never met a stranger. He was always available to help, advise, share a joke, or say a prayer with his family and friends.
He was an avid golfer, biker, and photographer. He loved traveling the world with his family. Most recently he traveled with his son to Tanzania on a safari.
He was very active in his community. He was member of the Butler Country Club, the Butler Symphony, and Butler YMCA. Charlie enjoyed serving in many different roles at both the Butler Symphony and the Butler YMCA.
Charlie is survived by a daughter, Lori (Gary) McCoy of Butler, PA; a son, Charles (Anne) Stitt of Portage, IN; two grandchildren, Ethan McCoy of Butler, PA and Paul Stitt of Indianapolis, IN; and a sister, Patricia Truell of Williamsville, NY.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Stitt; two brother-in-laws, Richard Miller, and George Truell; a sister-in-law, Janice Miller; and a granddaughter, Sarah Stitt.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 11:00 AM until the time of the Celebration of Charlie’s Life at 12:00 PM (Noon) at Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Rd., Butler, PA 16001.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Charlie to Community Alliance Church-Missions, 800 Mercer Rd., Butler, PA 16001, the Butler Community Symphony, 259 S. Main St., Butler, PA or Butler YMCA, 339 N. Washington St. Butler, PA in lieu of flowers.
