Butler City Council could vote on a revised Rental Ordinance and Program within the city later this month.
Councilman Don Shearer provided an update to the rest of council about the substance of a meeting with a large group of landlords earlier this month. He also passed along a copy of the new language to the City Solicitor for legal review.
The proposal includes a self-reporting checklist with pictures that both the landlord and tenant would be required to sign off on. The specific items on that list have not yet been determined but landlords are expected to be included in that discussion.
Consequences for failure to complete or committing fraud on the checklist could be fines of hundreds of dollars per day with the city able to take legal action against landlords if necessary.
If Council does vote to approve a first reading of the ordinance at their meeting later this month, they would then vote again for final approval in March. The ordinance would not go into effect until January 1, 2025.
