Butler City Council is considering designating part of the downtown area as a Rotary Arts and Cultural District.
Butler PM Rotary President Leslie Osche presented the plan to Council at their Thursday evening virtual meeting.
Rotary has proposed that the district would extend from Jefferson Street to East Fulton Street and encompass two blocks either direction from Main Street. Arts banners would be placed on the poles that could be sponsored but they would not interfere with the veterans banners.
Rotary is assigning a matching district grant to the project. The group would like to see events and activities on Cedar Street as well as at the Library, the Maridon Museum, and some of the 10 churches in that area. Butler Downtown and West Penn Power have been included with the planning for this effort. No zoning changes will be made.
Council members voiced support for the idea although some expressed a desire to expand the area to include further south on Main Street. Council is expected to designate a liaison to work with the groups and organizations advancing this plan.
