Clarence “Rich” Gilliland Jr., 74, of Butler passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025. He was born in Butler on December 21, 1950, to the late Clarence “Red” Sr., and Nancy (Boosel) Gilliland. He graduated from Butler High School and attended SRU. Clarence enjoyed all sports: local, college and pro; he also loved listening to music, especially Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Clapton. A good guitar solo was one of his favorites. He was an avid reader, liked history and trivia; he never missed completing the daily Butler Eagle crossword puzzle and cryptoquote. Clarence enjoyed a quick WORDLE to start his day. He worked daily to “stay in the game”. His determination, bravery and perseverance were inspirational. He loved the companionship of his senior dogs; the Hilton was referred to as the convalescent home for pups. Clarence was the beloved husband of Elaine (Hallahan) Gilliland, since their marriage on May 7, 1988; brother of Ruth Thomas, Sue (George) Saloom, Tim (Colleen) and George Gilliland; brother-in-law of Jean (John) Checket, Maria Jolley, James (Mary Beth) and David Hallahan; he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. “It’s your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself that determines how your life’s story will develop”.
