A local employer is expected to receive a large amount of federal funding to improve efficiency.
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded Cleveland Cliffs $575 million including up to $75 million to replace two existing natural-gas fired high temp slab reheat furnaces at the Butler Works plant with four Electrified Induction Slab Reheat Furnaces.
This project would lower carbon emissions, reduce energy costs, improve slab quality, and increase production capacity of electrical steels. Over 200 building trades jobs would be created at peak construction.
Approximately $80 million in annual cost savings and yield improvements is expected to be generated with the installation of the new equipment. Cliffs would then spend $100 million over a four year period on the Butler Works facility.
