Today is a relatively new federal holiday known as Juneteenth.
It serves as a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States—stemming back to June 19, 1865, when the Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform the country’s last enslaved people that they had been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation.
Most banks are closed for the day along with the stock market. The Post Office is also closed.
PennDOT offices will be shut down.
However, the Butler County Government Center and most local government offices will be operating today.
