With May’s arrival, most would assume that high temperatures would bring to mind blooming flowers and sunshine.
But a stretch of cold weather has hit the Butler area and isn’t expected to leave at least through the middle of next week.
According to AccuWeather, cold air, moisture and a visit from the polar vortex will trigger way out-of-season conditions for mid-May across portions of the Northeast. AccuWeather meteorologists expect the upcoming pattern to bring freezing conditions and snow that defies the norms for so late in the season.
Temperatures on Saturday are only expected to reach a high of 44 degrees in Butler. The average high in Butler County is 68 degrees and low is 41 degrees.
The cold weather could also cause issues for farmers and gardeners.
“Get ready to cover or bring in any sensitive plants you bought during the surge of warm weather this past weekend,” Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather’s top long-range forecaster, said.
Pastelok said the next 10 days may spell disaster for some gardeners, farmers and vintners alike. Plunging temperatures could cause damage to sensitive stock, recently bought plants, vineyards and orchards, said Pastelok.
