The Penn State Nittany Lions will play for the Big 10 championship this weekend after they defeated Maryland 44-7 Saturday, combined with Michigan defeating Ohio State 13-10. Penn State will meet #1-ranked Oregon at 8pm Saturday in Indianapolis. The Nittany Lions moved up to the #3 ranking this week.
The Slippery Rock football team upset #3-ranked and undefeated Kutztown 25-24 in overtime Saturday in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Rock and Golden Bears were tied at 17 following regulation. Kutztown scored a touchdown and an extra point on their first possession of the overtime. The Rock answered the touchdown, then scored the deciding two-point conversion with a “hook and ladder” play to win the game. (On that play, quarterback Brayden Long threw a screen pass to receiver Mike Solomon and he pitched the ball to running back Dreece Lawrence, who ran into the end zone with the winning score.)
The Rock will travel to California this Saturday in a game that will decide the Super Region-1 title, with the winner advancing to the Final Four of the national tournament. Kick-off is 1pm. (Hear the game on The Rock Station 97.7fm).
Pitt lost to Boston College 34-23 Saturday. It was the Panthers fifth loss in a row after beginning the season 7-0. Pitt now awaits a bowl bid.
Grove City lost Johns Hopkins 17-14 in the NCAA Division III playoffs Saturday. The Wolverines were held scoreless until the final 5-1/2 minutes of the game. Knoch graduate Scott Fraser helped Grove City break the shutout with a 10-yard touchdown reception. The Wolverines then blocked a punt for a touchdown. After an interception with just over two minutes remaining, Grove City moved 61 yards over 14 plays, but missed a field goal that would have tied the game with nine seconds remaining. Fraser tied a Grove City single-game record with 19 receptions. He ended the game with 231 yards.
