The first Division I athletic conference to cancel plans for any sports later this year has made their decision. The Ivy League announced it is canceling all fall sports, including football, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Other sports affected are soccer, field hockey, volleyball, cross country, and the fall part of winter sports like basketball. The league has left open the possibility of moving some seasons to the spring if the pandemic is better controlled in the U.S. by then.
Harvard has already announced they will hold only online classes for the next two semesters – with dorms only open to freshmen and seniors. Yale is limiting dorms to 60% capacity, and most classes will be held remotely.
Carnegie Mellon University has announced they will not participate in any intercollegiate athletics competition this fall. The decision announced Wednesday by CMU will eliminate football, volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis. Decisions on winter and spring sports have not been announced.
The Presidents Athletic Conference announced this week that they will play a football schedule of only in-conference games, limiting the schedule to nine games for each team.
Stanford University announced yesterday that it’s eliminating 11 of its 36 varsity sports, with the coronavirus pandemic forcing tough financial choices it had already been facing due to having one of the country’s largest athletics departments. The sports being dropped are: men’s and women’s fencing; field hockey; lightweight rowing; men’s rowing; co-ed and women’s sailing; squash; synchronized swimming; men’s volleyball; and wrestling. They will be eliminated after the 2020-21 academic year.
