Next year’s upcoming Butler County budget will be a decrease from last year.
The 2023 budget was presented at yesterday’s public meeting, and it showed a drop in both the total and general fund. The total budget is down four percent from last year at a proposed $244 million; the general fund meanwhile dropped nine percent at $74.8 million.
The general fund is mainly composed of local dollars, including tax revenue the county receives. The general fund is made up of additional dollars from the state and federal governments, along with other entities.
County officials say the large spike in the budget last year was a result of additional federal and state dollars coming to the county.
The budget doesn’t propose any new taxes on residents. In fact, the county is anticipating that the collection rate will rise to about 98 percent this year.
The judicial system and public safety continue to be the largest expense out of the general fund for the county.
The budget is up for review on the county’s website and inside the commissioner’s office. It will be voted on at the December 21st public meeting.
