New numbers across the country show that there are now over 6 million people who have filed for unemployment.
At the county’s public meeting yesterday, Commissioner Kim Geyer said there are still many unknowns as to when some businesses can start up again.
“It’s an hour-by-hour change,” Geyer said. “No one is really able to commit to anything long-term and provide people with end dates as to when businesses can start back up.”
Commissioner Kevin Boozel said the county is exploring different options, but remain at the mercy of the Governor’s office.
“We’ve had conversations with the Wolf administration on what the [federal emergency relief package] would look like for small businesses and all those things inside that package,” Boozel said. “We’re also looking locally with Mark Gordon (Butler County Director of Economic Development) and the Growth Collaborative, and what we can provide.”
The county government center has over 150 employees who are either furloughed or took earned time off.
Commissioner Leslie Osche said the county is also constantly in touch with Butler Health System.
“Butler Health System is confident right now that Butler is ready and prepared for the situation,” Osche said. “We’re also making backup plans to make sure that facilities and supplies are available.”
