We told you a few weeks ago about a PennDOT study touting the safety of recently constructed roundabouts in the area.
Our newsroom spoke with Cranberry Township Public Works Director Kelly Maurer who said the roundabout on Glen Eden Road has become a safer place for drivers.
“It was a high speed intersection, and you were almost taking your life into your hands by crossing Glen Eden,” Maurer said. “And now it’s just so much safer to travel. The roundabout speeds are generally below 25 miles per hour, everyone can take their turn. We have not had any serious crashes at this location since that time.”
She says that the township is putting more roundabouts in after seeing the success—including one at the new Seneca Valley elementary school.
However, Maurer also adds that roundabouts aren’t a perfect fit at every location.
“A roundabout can’t be used in every area. It depends on the topography, what property is there, if there’s enough room for it, and if it’s close to any other intersection.”
The PennDOT data found that roundabouts decreased fatal accidents in areas by 100 percent.
