Our newsroom has learned more about what led to a Monday afternoon fire that significantly damaged a home in downtown Butler.
A couple of pets died in the fire at a home on Mercer Street. Butler City Fire Chief Chris Switala says the pets were actually responsible for starting the fire.
“The cause of the fire was due to a heat lamp that was for a pet reptile that was in the house,” Switala said. “The heat lamp got knocked over by the cats in the house and knocked onto a couch in the living room.”
Switala estimated around $50,000 in damages—with the first floor receiving most of the damage from the flames.
