David “Dave” Matthew Hall, age 60, of Butler, PA, passed away unexpectedly on January 10, 2024 at Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, MD, following a brief illness.
He was born on September 22, 1963, in Butler, PA, to Jane Mellon Hall and the late E. Richard Hall.
Dave graduated from Butler Area High School, Grove City College with a Bachelors Degree, and Yale University with a Masters Degree. Dave was a member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church and the local chapter of DeMolay. He worked for the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., for 37 years. During his long career, he also taught college level courses and served on professional organizations both locally and internationally.
Dave was known for his intelligence, quick wit, and love of a spirited discussion. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Lake Erie, cooking for family and friends, and never stopped reading and learning.
Dave is survived by his mother, Jane M. Hall of Butler, PA; brother, Richard M. Hall of Alameda, CA; three sisters, Martha J. Towns of Keene, NH, Barbara Hall of Ellwood City, PA, and Victoria Hall of Brockton, NY; six nieces, Stephanie J. Towns of Peeskill, NY, Kelly E. Towns of Rochester, NY, Jessica M. Towns of Boston, MA, Melissa Murray of Ellwood City, PA, Brenna Szalinski of Pittsburgh, PA, and Abby Hall of Alameda, CA; three nephews, Andrew Waugaman of Charlotte, NC, Steve Waugaman of Denver, CO, and Jeremy Hall of Alameda, CA.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 11:00 AM – 1:000 PM at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA 16001.
A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Covenant Presbyterian Church (Trinity Presbyterian Campus), 107 Staley Ave., Butler, PA 16001 with Rev. John C.R. Silbert officiating.
