With warmer temperatures now here, state officials are urging residents to try their best to prevent brush fires.
“99 percent of wildfires are caused by people. So we want to make sure that people are being exceptionally vigilant about taking the necessary steps to avoid having the fire spread,” Department of Conservation and Natural Resources spokesman Wesley Robinson said.
Robinson says there are a few things you can do in order to prevent fires from starting.
“You want to make sure that a campfire is completely out and cool to the hand before you walk away from it,” Robinson said. “If you’re burning trash or have to do something like, you want to make sure you do it away from a home and away from other things that can catch fire.”
Robinson says that since the winter was especially warm and dry this year, the risk for fires is greater this spring.
