The PA Department of Health is taking steps to limit access to a dangerous drug that is becoming more common in Pennsylvania.
It’s called “xylazine” but more commonly referred to as “tranq.” It’s a powerful sedative approved for veterinary use on large animals but one that is increasingly found in the state’s illegal drug supply.
Acting Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen has filed notice to temporarily classify tranq to the list of Schedule 3 drugs—meaning it would be elevated to a controlled substance.
This move preserves the legitimate use of the drug by vets and farmers on livestock and other animals as well as assists law enforcement in prosecution of those who use the drug illegally to harm others.
