While there have been no documented cases of humans infected with Chronic Wasting Disease, state officials are offering deer hunters advice when it comes to protecting themselves from CWD.
Department of Agriculture spokesperson Shannon Powers recommends being aware of your surroundings and the type of deer you are hunting.
“Hunters should not shoot, handle, or eat meat from wild deer or elk that look sick, act strangely, or you found dead,” Powers said. “But you need to keep in mind that most CWD infected deer do not act strange or look sick.”
She recommends that when you field dress a deer, you should wear latex or rubber gloves and minimize how much you handle organs.
Powers says that can help prevent the spread of other diseases in a deer carcass.
