The Mars School District is planning to improve what is currently unusable property at no cost to the district.
At the Tuesday night school board meeting, the board heard from a representative of Independence Excavating which would like to move a large amount of dirt from the Route 228 project to a currently depressed wooded area owned by the district.
The area near the Centennial School parking lot and Officer Brooks Way would see approximately 240,000 cubic yards of dirt deposited, graded, and seeded by Independence. The land could then be used for a 3.5 acre parking lot and multi-purpose athletic field as well as a 2.5 acre baseball or softball field.
Independence would also pay the district $1 per cubic yard of dirt which would allow the district to collect $240,000 through the improvement project. Required permitting is still in the process of being obtained so the dirt will not be moved until March or April.
