The U.S. Department of Justice and Environmental Protection Agency have reached a settlement with Penn Energy Resources for Clean Air Act violations that occurred in Butler County.
Penn will pay a $2 million civil penalty for failing to comply with federal and state requirements to capture and control methane emissions from 17 oil and gas production facilities in Butler and Lawrence counties.
The company will also undertake compliance measures to mitigate the harm caused by their emissions. This project requires Penn to work with the PA Department of Environmental Protection to spend about $1.2 million to replace pollutant-emitting devices on 217 wells by next month.
The fine will be split equally between the federal and state governments. PennEnergy is a privately owned oil and gas company headquartered in Cranberry Township.
