Evie was born December 15, 1931, in Valencia, Butler County, PA to Leland William and Marcella Grabe Oesterling. She was married on June 29, 1951, to Wayne Russell Cypher of Butler celebrating almost 70 years of Marriage.
Being the fifth child of a wonderfully large family, she played violin and piano in the Oesterling Family Orchestra and sang with her sisters for many special events. Following graduation from Mars Area High School, she soon married and moved to Butler with “Waynie” and were blessed with three sons. She attended Slippery Rock University and obtained her teaching degree and taught at Center Avenue, Summit Township, and Center Township Elementary schools. After retiring from the Butler Area School District, she taught at St. Luke’s Lutheran School and was most known for her creative writing classes in “Miss Evie’s Attic”. She enjoyed baking, embroidery, sewing, and making cozy throws for family members.
As a child, the Oesterling family attended services in Middlesex but eventually went to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Butler where she and Wayne were married. After many years, Wayne and Evie attended St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Hannahstown. For 50 years, they were faithful members of the Butler County Camp Gideon’s International.
Evie is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne R. Cypher and resided in Concordia at The Orchard in Butler for the past eight years. She leaves their sons and daughters-in-love, Robert and Georgina (VA), Wesley and Deanna (PA), and Russell and Mary (GA). She was proud of their 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters, Kay Kuhn and Karen Mulligan, and two brothers, Charles “Chuck” Oesterling and Ronald “Ron” Oesterling, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
The Cypher family extend our deepest gratitude and thanks to the staff of Concordia at The Orchard, who professionally and lovingly cared for our parents. Special thanks to Kim Ritenour, who was especially kind and caring. Thank you to the staff at Good Samaritan Hospice for their gracious help during this time.
