Although avian influenza has not yet been observed in Pennsylvania, animal educators are cautioning local flock owners to be aware of the potential for danger.
According to Penn State Extension, this harmful pathogen has been verified in wild birds as well as domestic flocks in several eastern and Midwestern states including New York, Virginia, and Kentucky.
Since the poultry industry is the state’s second largest agricultural sector, Penn State Extension emphasizes that flock owners keep poultry away from other birds, immediately clean up feed spills to avoid attracting wild birds, and sanitize boots, hands, and tools often.
More information about avian influenza including symptoms and instructions for reporting suspected cases can be found on the Penn State Extension website.
