The 73rd Butler Farm Show starts today.
After being canceled last year due to the pandemic, the event is back. Most everything you’ll see and experience will be the same, although a change has been felt by those involved with the livestock sale.
According to the Farm Show’s Ken Metrick, the big packing plants have cut production drastically which means the local packers are swamped, some working 16 hours a day.
The change came with the kids having to find their packers prior to Thursday’s sale.
He says in the past, the person who purchased the animal could indicate where they wanted the meat processed. Since this year, packers are overwhelmed and can only handle so much, the kids found the processor for their animals prior to the farm show taking place.
Metrick says, “Hopefully next year things will be in a place where the buyer decides who is going to process their meat.”
The sale is scheduled for Thursday and Metrick says it may even be easier at checkout as things have been computerized.
You’ll find your favorites at this year’s farm show…the food, rides, vendors, animals, and more. Something new and fun tonight will be a watermelon eating contest.
The Farm Show runs through August 14th. You can find more farm show information here https://www.butlerfarmshow.com/.
