This week is Fire Prevention Week.
This annual observance is held nationwide to remind residents of the dangers of house fires and how easily they can occur.
The National Fire Protection Association has announced that this year’s theme is “Serve Up Fire Prevention In the Kitchen” This focuses on reminding people that cooking remains the leading cause of home fires and fire fatalities.
As a result of the ongoing pandemic, many people are spending more time at home, and trying to cook meals at home as opposed to going out to eat. This combination of factors presents a greater risk for fires.
The NFPA recommends that cooking never be left unattended and anything that can catch fire should be kept far away from the stove. Also, do not cook while sleepy, taking medication that could result in drowsiness, or under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
