American flags will be flown at half staff on Wednesday in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The day was first proclaimed by President Kennedy in 1962 and established by a joint resolution of Congress that same year, before President Clinton signed into law in 1994 the directive that government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly flags at half staff.
Peace Officers Memorial Day shows respect and remembrance to the nearly 22,000 law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Memorial Day is the only other day in which flags are required to be flown at half staff by federal law.
