A Butler native who has been imprisoned in Russia has finally received a “wrongfully detained” designation by the U.S. government.
According to the family of Marc Fogel, he received the long-sought designation in mid-October. Now that Fogel is classified as wrongfully detained, it brings significant resources for the family, including medical care and financial support.
Fogel has been in a Russian prison since 2021 when he was arrested for having prescribed medical marijuana on him at the airport.
Fogel was teaching in Russia for about 10 years before he was sentenced to a hard labor camp.
