The demolition of a long vacant building in Butler Township is set to get underway next week.
According to Butler Township Commissioner Dave Zarnick, demolition of the former Lyndora Legion at 100 Bessemer Avenue will begin Monday.
“The building has sat vacant for I’m not sure how many years now. There’s vagrants living in there, we just found some again there last week,” Zarnick said. “There’s no utilities in there. People are moving in and squatting in that building.”
The property was owned by two different people who have since passed away so the Township has looked to Butler County for assistance with the funds necessary to tear down the building.
“Once we condemned the property, we approached the county a couple of years ago. They allotted so much money into a fund for demolition, but at that time there was enough to cover the cost. So, we waited until the following year when they put money into the fund,” Zarnick said. “Enough funds have now been accumulated and the contractor has kept that contract, which expires at the end of the year. That’s why we’ll be demolishing it at the end of the year.”
Equipment will be moved into the area and part of Bessemer will be blocked off with demolition and cleanup expected to be completed in a couple days.
