A former Butler bar that was known for its close quarters and friendly crowds is being torn down.
The former Vero’s Bar on East Locust Street is being taken down as part of a construction project on the property.
The bar was owned and operated by the Vero family starting in 1933 to its closure in 1995.
Vero said the history of building stems back to his grandfather, when he tore down a wrap-around porch on the adjacent house in order to build a produce store. Eventually, Vero sought a liquor license.
“It was the first liquor license granted in Butler after prohibition,” former owner Fred Vero said. The license was granted on April 8, 1933 and would serve as a community gathering spot until the day it closed.
Dan Stutz, a former patron, was on location today to remember the neighborhood pub.
“We called it ‘The Home Office,'” Stutz said. “Mrs. Vero would cook meals in the kitchen and then send them through a sliding door by the bar. Just a great place.”
