Frank J. Miller, 86, of Renfrew, passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born May 18, 1939, in Windber, he was the son of the late Franklin G. Miller and the late Helen (Lenusky) Miller.
A graduate of Windber Area High School, Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, stationed in Greenland for much of that time. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Clarion University, where he met the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Carol (Semmens) Miller.
Frank taught for 37 years in the Butler Area School District, most of that time spent as an English teacher at the Junior High School. His good humor, positive outlook, and genuine kindness led the student body to award him the title of “Favorite Teacher” on more than one occasion.
Frank was a faithful member of First English Lutheran Church. He was always eager to help friends and neighbors in need and enjoyed his volunteer work at Butler Meals on Wheels and at the Jean B. Purvis Community Health Center. He was an avid bowler and a sports fan, especially of Penn State and Pittsburgh sports.
Most of all, he was a fan of his family. Nothing brought him more joy than spending holidays and summer vacations with his kids and grandkids, and he was immensely proud of his role as “Pap.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy, and a brother, James. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Karen Walker (husband Lawrence) of State College; his son, Matthew Miller (wife Heidi) of Whitehouse Station, NJ; six grandchildren: Mitchell Walker (wife Corrina), Hayley Miller, Jacob Miller, Thomas Miller, Maxwell Walker, and Ryan Miller. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathy Minitti (husband Pat) of Chandler, AZ, and Janet Jablon (husband Bill) of Windber, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 29, from 4 to 6 pm at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 E. North Street, Butler, PA.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, at 11 am at First English Lutheran Church, 241 N. Main Street, Butler, PA, with Rev. Kimberly van Driel officiating. All are kindly asked to meet at the church.
