PACKERS DOWN 49ERS 34-17: The Green Bay Packers downed the San Francisco 49ers 34-17 last night (November 5th) in California, getting the win over a 49ers team that was missing key players due to injuries and several being on the reserve/Covid-19 list. They included San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, out with an ankle injury and tight end George Kittle with a foot injury. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was 25 of 31 for 305 yards last night with four touchdowns.
REPORT: RAIDERS FINED $500K, LOSE DRAFT PICK DUE TO CORONAVIRUS VIOLATIONS: The NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders have been fined $500,000 and stripped of a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft for, quote, “brazen and repeated violations” of the Covid-19 protocols, ESPN reported yesterday (November 5th). Head coach Jon Gruden was also fined an additional $150,000. The Raiders are the first team to lose a draft pick for coronavirus violations.
PLAYERS APPROVE PLAN TO START NBA SEASON ON DECEMBER 22ND: The National Basketball Players Association voted Thursday (November 5th) in favor of starting the new NBA season on December 22nd, the date the league had wanted to begin a shortened 72-game season. The vote was conducted by the players union’s board, which has a player rep from each team. The last season, which was suspended for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, just ended on October 11th when the L.A. Lakers won the NBA championship.

CALIFORNIA-WASHINGTON GAME CANCELED DUE TO POSITIVE CORONAVIRUS TEST: Saturday’s (November 7th) football game between California and Washington, which was supposed to be one of the games on opening day of the Pac-12’s shortened 2020 season, was canceled yesterday (November 5th) after a California player tested positive for the coronavirus. The Pac-12 said California doesn’t have the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game because of the positive test and the need for other players to self-isolate. The game will be declared a no-contest.

–North Allegheny and Central Catholic meet in the WPIAL 6A championship tonight at 7pm. The game is being played at North Hills high school.
–Pine-Richland will host Penn-Trafford in the 5A semifinals at 7pm.
–North Catholic will face Elizabeth Forward in the Class 3A semifinals. The game is begin played at Mars high school with a 7pm kick-off.
–Karns City will travel to Wilmington tonight in the PIAA playoff 2A First Round.
–Grove City travels to Hickory Saturday for the District-10 3A championship – which is also a PIAA First Round game. Kick-off is 7pm.

Lucia Wells scored with 5:50 left in the second overtime to help North Allegheny become back-to-back Class 4A champions with a 2-1 win over Butler. North Allegheny now advances to play in the PIAA quarterfinals Nov. 14, fresh off its second WPIAL girls’ soccer title.
–The Mars Girls Soccer team will bring a 38-game win streak into the WPIAL 3A championship game Saturday. The defending WPIAL champions are playing in the championship game for the fourth year in a row. The Planets are 15-0 this season. Plum enters the game 16-0. The match will be played at North Allegheny high school at begins at noon.
–The North Catholic Girls will meet Avonworth in the 2A title game Saturday at Gateway high school beginning at noon.
–The Seneca Valley Boys Soccer team will meet Peters Township in the 4A championship Saturday at North Allegheny high school beginning at 3pm. Seneca Valley has won 10-games in a row, and are now 13-1-1 this season.
–The Slippery Rock Girls Soccer team will face Villa Maria in the District-10 2A championship Saturday at 1pm in the Troy-Alan Stadium in Slippery Rock.
–The North Catholic Girls Volleyball will face Ellwood City in the WPIAL 2A championship Saturday. The title match will begin at 3pm and will be played at Fox Chapel high school.
More than a dozen Butler County runners will be competing in the PIAA Cross Country Championships in Hershey this weekend. Butler’s CJ Singleton is the WPIAL Triple-A champion and will be joined by teammates Sage and Skyler Vavro. Mike Formica of Knoch high school is the 2A WPIAL Individual champion. Other runners who will be competing are Noah Peterson, Eli Dewitt and Dylan Kirchner from Seneca Valley. Hannah Burgoon and Jenna Blauser from Moniteau. Seven runners from North Catholic will be competing in the 2A Team championship.
Freeport Hockey remains undefeated by beating North Catholic 5-1.
