Even as more winter weather moves through the area, local residents can look forward to spring by ordering native trees and shrubs to plant later this year.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery is once again accepting orders for many different species of tree and shrub seedlings on their website, pgc.pa.gov.
The Centre County facility has a large inventory of red oak, wild grape, northern spicebush, and flowering dogwood. Planting native species of evergreens, shrubs, and fruit-and nut-bearing trees is a great way to provide food and cover for wildlife as well as watershed protection and soil erosion control.
Seedlings are sold in units of 25 and discounts are available for larger orders. The seedling order form contains plant descriptions, site preferences, and benefits of each species available.
