After a recent bear attack in Butler Township there are some questions about what to do during an attack.
Travis Lau of the Pennsylvania Game Commission says this area if very susceptible to bears because of trash and food left outside in commercial and residential areas. That includes bird feeders.
But what happens when you encounter a bear? Lau says let the bear know you are there and slowly back out.
“When encountering a bear, it’s always best to let the bear know that you are there. Bears don’t like to be taken by surprise,” Lau said. “If encountering a bear the last thing you want to do is run away from a bear because it could be perceived as a threat.”
Lau says once the bear notices you do not run or climb a tree because that can also be perceived as a threat to the bear.
