State game officials are stepping up their efforts to limit the spread of a disease in deer.
Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD, was recently detected at a hunting facility in Northwest PA; that resulted in the creation of a Disease Management Area, known as a DMA, to halt further spread.
“We tend to get new DMAs due to CWD cropping up in new areas or we have the expansion of existing DMAs because there are deer being detected that are near the boundary that require pushing the buffer zone out further,” Game Commission spokesman Travis Lau said.
The disease makes deer look very sick. Officials say if hunters shoot a deer that appears ill, to make sure to contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission first.
