George R. Murphy, 81, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on September 17, 2017 at the Butler Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 25, 1936 in Butler, Pennsylvania to the late James Wills Murphy and Jeanne Gallagher Murphy.
George was Methodist by faith. He attended Butler High School and Slippery Rock Teacher’s College where he received a B.S. in Education in 1959. George went on to the University of New Mexico, earning a Masters of Math Science in 1964. He was a veteran of the US Air Force during peacetime, serving in Texas at Lackland Air Force Base. A highly respected teacher, George taught mathematics at Pine-Richland for 40 years, as well as evening classes at BC3. Upon the birth of his first granddaughter, he decided to retire in 1996 to spend more time with his family. George was a member of The Mathematical Association of America. He dedicated his entire life to his family and teaching.
George is survived by his wife, Sue Greenawalt Murphy who he married on November 23, 1960; one daughter, Erin C. Murphy Fugh and her husband Mark of Butler, PA; two granddaughters, Abigail Murphy Fugh and Maggie Lyn Murphy Fugh of Butler, PA; and several cousins.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Friends will be received Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street Butler, PA.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc.,124 East North Street, Butler, PA.
