Contaminated onions may be the source of a salmonella outbreak across the country and a recently issued recall could be affecting consumers in Western Pennsylvania.
The CDC announced a salmonella outbreak linked to onions from Thomson International in Bakersfield, California. Those onions were then sold at Pittsburgh-area Giant Eagle and Market District locations.
The recall includes both bulk and bagged Spanish, white, and red onions. Giant Eagle says they have called customers who bought the onions, or foods prepared with the onions.
So far 400 people have become sick across the country, and 60 have been hospitalized.
