Governor Josh Shapiro is removing the college credit requirement in order to become a state trooper.
Earlier this week, Shapiro announced that applicants to the state police academy no longer need to have at least 60 college credits.
The move is being made on a trial basis for the next round of applicants at the state police. The new requirements now include a high school diploma or GED certificate and a valid driver’s license from any state.
Cadets also must be 21-years-old by the time they enter the academy.
Shapiro says there is a shortage of officers in the state and believes that the academy offers rigorous training that enables troopers to effectively do their jobs.
