Governor Tom Wolf says the state gas tax is outdated and is looking to phases it out.
Wolf says it’s an unreliable source of funding for the state’s transportation network.
He’s also established a bipartisan commission to look into what he calls “long-term funding solutions” to pay for Pennsylvania roadways.
PennDOT’s latest assessment showed a $9 billion funding gap—and projects that number to grow to $14.5 billion over the next decade.
Among other reasons, experts cite reduced fuel revenue, better gas mileage, and electric cars as a reason why the gas tax has not been able to keep pace in funding PennDOT.
