The Butler Area School District will receive grant funds to help students deal with grief and loss.
The district’s secondary and elementary schools have been designated as “Grief-Sensitive Schools” by the New York Life Foundation.
Each school will receive a $500 grant to help with creating a bereavement support plan as well as encourage ongoing staff development through the national Grief-Sensitive Schools initiative.
Studies have shown that 1 in 15 U.S. children will experience the death of a parent or sibling before the age of 18 and unresolved grief can negatively impact behavior as well as performance in school.
