Pennsylvania’s most famous rodent made his prediction this morning.
Punxatawney Phil emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter.
Organizers said it was one of the largest weekday crowds they had ever seen for the ceremony, that returned after canceling in-person attendance last year due to the pandemic.
The annual tradition is attributed to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter.
The holiday garners much fanfare in Punxatawney, with the ceremony being held at Gobbler’s Knob. It at times has had an attendance of 10,000. The first groundhog celebration for the day can be traced to the late 1800s.
