Harry Leroy “Sonny” Gold, 79, of Butler passed away in the comfort of his home from Lewy Body Dementia on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, one day before his 53 Wedding Anniversary.
He was born on September 15, 1940 to the late Marian (Renfrew) and Harry A. Gold. Sonny graduated from Butler High in 1958. He then entered the Air Force in 1961 and was sent to Wasserkuppe, Germany where he was an Air Traffic Controller on the German Russian border. While in Germany he became a base projectionist and continued working after returning home at many theaters in the Pittsburgh area including the Penn and Plaza Theater’s and Hill Top Drive In.
Upon returning home he was one of the first people to sign up to attend BC3.
He worked 30 plus years at Armco in the metallurgical department, where his favorite saying was “you’re only as good as your last heat”!
After retiring from Armco he worked 10 years part-time at Butler Technology delivering parts.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 683, the Pennsylvania Gun Collectors Association, Ohio Gun Collectors Association, and Ohio Valley Military Society.
Sonny was known to love the music of the 50’s and 60’s and was a big fan of the Four Freshman, anyone that knew him knew he felt they were the greatest singing group ever.
Harry was the beloved husband of Luella (Bowser) Gold whom he married on July 15th 1967; loving father of William (Colleen Christie) Gold and Lea Ann (Todd) Donnel, all of Butler; grandfather of Darian, Brady and Kaylee Gold and Logan and Levi Donnel; nephew of LeRoy Renfrew of Saxonburg; brother-in-law of Kay Gold of Butler and Alvin & Debbie Bowser of Cabot. He is also survived by four nieces and a nephew.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brothers Ronald and Albert Gold, and his-in-laws Mae L. and Edward G. Bowser.
The family would like to thank the Lutheran Senior Life VNA, and a very special thanks to Rhonda Tyson for all her help, love and support in the last month of Sonny’s life, she was a true blessing.
