Hazel Virginia Turner, 94, of Butler, formerly of Ridgeway, VA, passed away on June 21, 2022 while under the care of Armstrong Rehabilitation and Health Center in Kittanning and Gateway Hospice Services.
Born on July 17, 1927 in Ridgeway VA, she was the daughter of the late William C. Martin and Annie M. (Ensley) Martin.
Hazel had various employers throughout her lifetime. As a teenager in Ridgeway, VA, she washed and ironed laundry for local families and, as an adult, she worked in furniture factories and restaurants in the Martinsville, VA area. While living in Pennsylvania, she was employed as a personal maid, babysitter and housekeeper for several prominent families in Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh and Butler.
Although Hazel was a private person, she enjoyed walking (or riding The Bus) through downtown Butler and often conversed with acquaintances on The Bus, on the street and within downtown businesses.
Hazel adored her family and spent much of her time watching her grandchildren. Surviving is her son Roy (Beverly) Martin of Hilliards; her sister Katy Dalton of Martinsville, VA; three grandchildren- Cathy Martin of Martinsville, VA, William Martin of Philadelphia and Veronica Martin of Hilliards; three great grandchildren—Nijeria Jones and Alanna Hairston of Radford, VA and Sheri Millner of Collinsville, VA.; two great great grandchildren Khloe and Kobe Martin of Collinsville, VA; a niece Lillian Nash of Upper Marlboro, MD and many cousins.
In addition to her parents, preceding her in death was her husband Thomas Turner (Martinsville, VA); three brothers—William, John and Rufus Martin; three sisters—Elizabeth Martin, Mary Martin and Irene Nash; and one grandchild Karen Renee Harris.
Visitation will be held at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, PA on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 11 AM until time of service at 12 PM with Pastor Veda Holland of Grove City Mount Olive Baptist Church officiating.
