Bills that would prohibit an abortion once a heartbeat is detected have been introduced into the state House and Senate.
The bill in the house is sponsored by Republican Representative Stephanie Borowicz of Clinton and Centre Counties.
“If there’s a heartbeat detected, no abortion can be performed.” Borowicz said. “When you hear a baby’s heartbeat everything changes. If we are declared dead when our heart stops, why are we not declared alive when it begins?”
Governor Tom Wolf said he would veto the legislation if the bill would reach him.
However, supporters of the bill say it could lay the groundwork for the election of a pro-life governor who would support the legislation in 2022.
