Helen Ruth Ferguson, 91, of Butler, PA, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospice.
She was born December 15, 1926 in North Washington, PA, the daughter of the late Roy C. Ferguson and Margaret (Jack) Ferguson.
Helen was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she had served as deacon and an elder on the session. She graduated from Concord Twp. High School in 1944, Slippery Rock State Teacher’s College in 1948 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1965 with a Master’s Degree in Education. Helen taught at Center Ave. and Broad St. Schools. She retired from teaching in the Butler Area School District.
She was a life member of NEA and PASR having served as president of PASR, Butler Chapter and director of Region 8 of the state PASR. She was also a member of Butler Business and Professional Women’s Club (past president and director), the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (past president of Alpha Sigma Chapter), Butler Woman’s Club (past president), Friends of the Library (past president), National Audubon Society, and the Bartramian Audubon Society of Slippery Rock (past president). She served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, knit helmet hats for soldiers and hats for Children and Youth Services of Butler. Helen’s hobbies included bird watching, camping at Slippery Rock campground and knitting hats.
She is survived by the Andy and Judy Stoops family, who were her caregivers, several cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Bernice Ferguson.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 230 E. Jefferson St., Butler on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1PM.
Private burial in the North Washington Cemetery.
