Herman Emanuele, 95, of Butler, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Born March 5, 1929, in Grove City, he was a son of the late Donato and Rosina Molle Emanuele.
Herman graduated first in his class at Grove City High School and attended Grove City College, where he obtained a degree in chemical engineering.
He started his professional engineering career in 1951 with Koppers, Inc., in Petrolia, and retired from the same plant with 38 years of service. He advanced through multiple positions of authority at Koppers, ending as plant superintendent in 1989.
Herman was a U.S. Army veteran who served our country in the Chemical and Biological Warfare unit at Fort Detrick, Maryland, from 1955-1957.
He met Jeanne Grossi, and they were married May 29, 1954, at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Butler.
Herman was an active member of St. Michael, starting and leading a Boy Scouts troop for many years as scout master, as well as working on countless projects at St Michael School and Church. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus.
Herman always shared the fond memories of the travel adventures he and Jeanne made every summer with their grandchildren in their RV camper.
Herman’s passion for gardening was known far and wide among family, friends, and neighbors. The bounty from his ever-expanding vegetable garden rivaled that of the produce departments of local supermarkets.
He was an avid woodworker, and the beautiful results of his craftsmanship will decorate the homes of family and friends for many years to come. He also participated in his son-in-law’s fireworks business putting on shows across western Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanne Grossi Emanuele; four children, Daniel Emanuele (Cindy Emanuele) of Bethel Park, Pa., Gina Mahood (Pete Greenstreet), of Lynwood, Wash., Mark Emanuele (Marianne Emanuele) of Prescott, Ariz., and Julie Cartwright (Dr. Scott Cartwright) of Franklin, Pa. In addition, Herman and Jeanne have seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donato and Rosina Emanuele; one brother, Dominic Emanuele; and three sisters, Leonarda Puntureri, Mary Emanuele, and Velma Emanuele.
