High School Sports:
Girls Soccer:
–Mars won the WPIAL Girls 3A Soccer championship Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Plum at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh. Taylor Hamlett scored twice for the Planets. Mars will meet District-10 champion Warren Tuesday in the first round of the state playoffs. That match will be played at North Allegheny and begins at 6pm.
–North Catholic won the Girls 2A title with a 1-0 win in double overtime over Yough. Jayden Sharpless scored the game-winner for the Trojanettes. North Catholic will meet Mercyhurst Prep in the PIAA first round tomorrow. The match will be played at Mars high school beginning at 6pm.
–Also in 2A: Karns City will meet Bald Eagle in the PIAA First Round Tuesday. The match will be played at Brockway high school beginning at 6pm.
Girls Volleyball:
–The Knoch Girls Volleyball team won their third consecutive WPIAL championship with a 3-1 win over Thomas Jefferson Saturday. The Knights improved to 21-1 this season. They will meet South Fayette Tuesday in the PIAA 3A First Round. The match will be played at Shaler high school beginning at 7:30pm.
–Freeport won the WPIAL 2A championship with a 3-2 victory over defending champion North Catholic Saturday. The Yellow Jackets improved to 18-0 this season and will meet Brookville Tuesday in the state tournament first round. The match is at Shaler high school at 6pm. North Catholic lost their first match of the year, and are now 20-1. The Trojanettes get Corry at Meadville high school in the state first round Tuesday at 7:30pm.
–Canon McMillan ended North Allegheny’s 65-match winning streak to win the Class 4A title.
Cross Country:
–The Butler Boys finished fourth in the PIAA Championships in Hershey Saturday. North Allegeny finished one spot in front of the Golden Tornado in Class 3A. Butler’s Sage Vavro finished ninth overall. C.J. Singleton finished 13th. Skyler Vavro finished 23rd, to give Butler three All-State performers for the first time in school history.
It was Butler’s third-best finish in the state championships, behind only the Butler 1980 and 1981 teams who finished 3rd and 2nd respectively.
The Seneca Valley Girls were eighth overall in 3A. The Knoch Girls finished 14th overall in 2A.
The Seneca Valley, Mars and North Catholic football teams were all knocked out of the WPIAL football playoffs Friday. Seneca Valley fell 35-14 to Mt. Lebanon. Mars lost 47-6 to Peters Township. North Catholic lost 32-27 to South Park.
North Allegheny defeated Canon-McMillan 48-7. The Tigers will meet Pine-Richland this Friday in the semifinals of 6A.
