High School Sports:
The Seneca Valley swimmers were runner-up at both the Boys and Girls WPIAL Triple-A Swimming championships over the weekend.
–Seneca Valley’s Daniel Simoes won the 200 Individual Medley with a new pool and school record. The Raider boys also won the 400 Freestyle Relay.
–Butler’s David Bocci won the 500 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. He set pool records in both events. His time of 48.9 was also a school record in the 100 Butterfly.
–Ben Borvendeg of Butler won the 50 Freestyle in a school record time of 20.9 seconds.
–Seneca Valley’s Edie Sawyer won the 100 Breaststroke. She set a new school record in her victory.
–Butler’s Abbie Griffith placed third in both the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. Her time of 57.2 in the Backstroke was also a school record.
WPIAL Basketball Playoffs:
–The Butler Boys will visit Upper St. Clair in the WPIAL 6A semifinals Tuesday. Hear the game on WBUT beginning at 5:50pm. Tip-off is 6pm. Butler enters the game 12-8 after defeating Penn-Trafford 58-55 in overtime Friday.
–Upper St. Clair improved to 18-1 by edging Seneca Valley 72-70.
–Pine-Richland will visit Fox Chapel in the other 6A semifinal.
–The North Catholic Boys will visit Quaker Valley tonight in the 4A quarterfinals. Tip-off is 6pm,
–The Mars Boys will visit Chartiers Valley Wednesday in the 5A semifinals.
–The Knoch Girls will visit Beaver in the 4A semifinals Tuesday at 6pm. Hear the game on WISR beginning at 5:45pm. Knoch enters the game 10-1 after defeating Blackhawk 51-45 in the quarterfinal round. Beaver is 18-0.
–The North Catholic Girls will host Laurel Wednesday in the 3A semifinals. Tip-off is 6pm.
–The Slippery Rock Girls Basketball team defeated Conneaut 42-24 Saturday to advance into the District 10 semifinals. The Rockets went on a 23-0 after trailing by one point at the half to break the game open. They will meet Grove City in the semifinals. The Eagles defeated General McLaine 39-24 Saturday.
The Butler Boys Bowlers finished fifth in the PA Western Regional Tournament Saturday in Pittsburgh. In a normal season, that is good enough to get a team to the State Championships, but due to the pandemic, only three teams are advancing this year. Rocco Rice led the Butler bowlers with a 616 Series. Hempfield defeated North Allegheny 2-1 in the championship roll-off.
Freeport’s Mark Livingston won the PA Western Regional Singles championship Friday. Livingston rolled a 299 game in the title match to defeat North Allegheny’s Dylan Scheidler. Mark rang a ten pin on his final throw.
